A highly overbased magnesium alkyltoluene sulfonate is produced. The process comprises the following steps: (A) at least one oil-soluble alkyltoluenesulfonic acid and at least one magnesium source; (i) at least one hydrocarbon solvent; and (ii) at least one type. Reacting in the presence of a mixture of a low molecular weight alcohol; (B) contacting the reaction product of step (A) with at least one promoter and water; (C) the product of step (B). Contacting the overbased acid; and (D) heating the reaction product of step (C) to a temperature above the distillation temperature of the hydrocarbon solvent, the low molecular weight alcohol, and water, A step of distilling off the solvent, the low molecular weight alcohol, and water; [Selection figure] None |
