abstract | A simple and simple method for producing a retardation film is provided. A step of applying a composition comprising a liquid crystalline polymer having a photoreactive group and a solvent to a substrate, and drying the composition under reduced pressure or natural drying, followed by liquid crystal of the liquid crystalline polymer. The step of forming a photoreactive layer by distilling off the solvent in the composition by heating and drying at a temperature lower than the phase temperature, and irradiating the photoreactive layer with linearly polarized light, thereby causing thermal orientation. A method of producing a retardation film, comprising: a step of forming a layer; and a step of heat-treating the thermally oriented layer at a temperature not lower than the liquid crystal phase temperature of the liquid crystalline polymer and lower than the isotropic phase transition temperature. .
