The present invention provides a hydroxyalkylalkylcellulose for tableting having a specific surface area of 0.5 to 5.0 m2 / g measured by BET method, and a solid preparation containing at least the same. Also, a step of contacting the pulp with an alkali metal hydroxide solution to obtain alkali cellulose, a step of reacting the obtained alkali cellulose with an etherifying agent to obtain a first hydroxyalkylalkyl cellulose, a pulverizing step, and pulverizing The first hydroxyalkylalkyl cellulose thus obtained is depolymerized by hydrolysis using an acid catalyst or by oxidative decomposition using an oxidizing agent to obtain a second hydroxyalkylalkylcellulose.
