abstract | The present invention provides a composition for removing metals, particularly mercury, from exhaust gas, and a method for using the composition. An aqueous solution of at least one water-soluble alkaline earth polysulfide is included in a sufficient amount to react with a metal and at least one redox buffer, wherein the solution has a pH between 4.5 and 6.5. A composition in which a polysulfide and a buffer are co-precipitated to form a drug that reacts with the metal. A method of removing metal from exhaust gas comprising the step of contacting the composition with exhaust gas. A method for removing metal (mercury), wherein the alkaline earth polysulfide is magnesium polysulfide, calcium polysulfide or a mixture and is present in a solution of 25 to 29%.
