abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect the amount of water contained in a recording material. An ultrasonic sensor according to the present invention is attached to an image forming apparatus having a fixing unit that heats a recording material to fix an image on the recording material, and transmits a ultrasonic wave to the recording material; A receiving unit that receives an ultrasonic wave transmitted from the transmitting unit and that passes through the recording material and outputs a signal corresponding to the received ultrasonic wave, wherein the recording material includes the fixing unit. Before passing, the receiving unit receives and outputs an ultrasonic wave through the recording material, and after the recording material passes through the fixing unit, the receiving unit passes through the recording material. It has a detection part which detects the information about the amount of moisture which the recording material contained before passing through the fixing part based on the 2nd signal which received and outputted the ultrasonic wave which carried out.
