abstract Disclosed is a versatile binder composition that includes a material that can be used in an alkaline environment and that provides strong mechanical properties upon curing, and is substantially free of formaldehyde. A formaldehyde substantially comprising: (i) resorcinol and (ii) one or more dialdehydes selected from cyclohexanedicarboxaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, or a mixture thereof. A thermosetting binder composition containing no cis-1,3 cyclohexanedicarboxaldehyde, trans-1,3 cyclohexanedicarboxaldehyde, cis-1,4 cyclohexanedicarboxaldehyde, trans-1 , 4 cyclohexanedicarboxaldehyde, or a binder composition that is cyclohexanedialdehyde selected from a mixture of any two or more thereof.
