abstract | A membrane electrode assembly for a polymer electrolyte fuel cell is provided which has low internal resistance, low hydrogen leakage, and high mechanical strength. SOLUTION: A plurality of through-holes 22a each including an anode 20, a cathode 30, and a solid polymer electrolyte membrane 40 disposed therebetween are in contact with a first surface of the solid polymer electrolyte membrane 40. And a catalyst portion 24 that is in contact with the first surface of the solid polymer electrolyte membrane 40 and is filled in the through-hole 22a, and the cathode 30 is the second surface of the solid polymer electrolyte membrane 40. The average opening area per one through hole 22a of the porous sheet 22 is 0.002 to 0.08 mm2, the opening ratio of the porous sheet 22 is 30 to 80%, The membrane electrode assembly 10 in which the penetration thickness T + of the solid polymer electrolyte membrane 40 penetrating into the holes 22a is 4 μm or less, and the thickness T of the solid polymer electrolyte membrane 40 is 7 to 20 μm.
