Method and apparatus for an ophthalmic device comprising a hybrid alignment layer and a shaped liquid crystal layer |
abstract |
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for providing a variable optical insert in an ophthalmic lens. The variable optical insert may have surfaces with different radii of curvature. The liquid crystal layer provides a variable optical function and in some embodiments can be used to provide an alignment layer in the liquid crystal layer that can be patterned in a hybrid manner. By patterning, the minimum potential required to cause a shift in the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules in the intraocular device can be reduced. An energy source can power a variable optical insert contained within the ophthalmic lens. In some embodiments, the ophthalmic lens is cast from a silicone hydrogel. Various ophthalmic lens entities can include an electroactive liquid crystal layer to electrically control refractive properties. [Selection] Figure 1 |
