abstract | Disclosed is a viscosity index improver excellent in viscosity index improvement effect and shear stability. A viscosity index improver (X1) comprising a (co) polymer (A1), wherein (A1) is a (co) polymer satisfying the following (1) to (5): Viscosity index improver. (1) The weight average molecular weight (Mw) of the (co) polymer is less than 150,000 to less than 200,000 (2) Corresponds to 1/4 or less of the peak top molecular weight (Mp) in the molecular weight distribution curve of the (co) polymer. (3) (co) polymer Mw / Mp is 1.08 or more (4) (co) polymer solubility parameter is 7.3-9 .5 (cal / cm 3 ) 1/2 (5) (Co) polymer having (meth) acrylic acid alkyl ester (a) having a branched alkyl group having 5 to 36 carbon atoms as an essential constituent monomer. |
