titleOfInvention Gradient array dielectrophoretic separation (GrADS) with parallel phototherapy
abstract Methods and devices in which heterogeneous populations of cells or particles are introduced into a series of chambers having a continuously increasing dielectrophoretic field generated by a planar microelectrode array and are therefore separated by charge and size. A transparent or translucent third electrode overlying the planar array defines the flow chamber ceiling and allows simultaneous introduction of phototherapy to the cells while separating the cells. The condition of having a planar electrode adjacent to the side of the capture electrode can be used to confine and retain individual encapsulated cells in the final collection and elution phase for the purpose of repulsive dielectrophoresis. . The entire process can be monitored electronically by impedance testing or visually by microscopy, in situ and in real time, without interrupting the separation process. [Selection] Figure 13
