The present invention relates to a nanoparticle comprising a sterol and a component derived from Quillaja saponaria molina selected from quinaya acid and Quillaja saponin, and does not comprise a phospholipid. The present invention also relates to compositions comprising nanoparticles, in particular the use of nanoparticles as an adjuvant in vaccines, the use of nanoparticles as a carrier for amphiphilic or hydrophobic molecules, and agents for the treatment of cancer. Relates to the use of nanoparticles. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a method for producing phospholipid-free nanoparticles, a method for treating cancer, and a method for evaluating the applicability of a method for treating cancer.
