titleOfInvention | Adhesive composite coacervate and methods of making and using the same |
abstract | In this specification, the synthesis of adhesive composite coacervates and their use are described. The adhesive complex coacervate is produced by reacting (a) at least one polyanion containing a plurality of activated ester groups and (b) at least one polycation containing a plurality of nucleophilic groups, The nucleophilic group reacts with the activated ester group to form a new covalent bond between the polycation and the polyanion. The adhesive composite coacervate described herein has a low interfacial tension between water and a wet substrate. When applied to a wet substrate, they extend to the interface without becoming spherical. Adhesive composite coacervates have many biological uses as bioadhesives and drug delivery vehicles. In particular, the adhesive composite coacervates described herein are particularly useful in underwater applications and situations where water is present (eg, physiological environments).
