abstract An apparatus 1 for determining the effective depth of case hardening or nitriding of a steel member comprises a measuring head 2 comprising a laser light source 10 for generating a variable frequency radiation that scans a predetermined part of the member 20 to be measured, and a member to be measured. An infrared detector 16 configured to detect the generated infrared radiation, a calculation means 17 for the received infrared radiation spectrum, and an evolution measuring device 3 are provided. The evolutionary measuring instrument is connected to the measuring head 2 and is suitable for calculating the hardness profile of the member to be measured, based on the starting profile and the spectrum of the received infrared radiation.
