abstract |
A sheet product suitable for use as a battery separator and a method of forming the sheet product. The method comprises the steps of forming a mixture of a thermoplastic polymer and a fluid having a high vapor pressure, forming the mixture into a sheet material, and an intermediate material having a fluid to polymer crystallinity ratio of 0.15 to 1 Stretching the sheet material at an elevated temperature to form a fluid, followed by a second stretching / fluid evaporation at a lower temperature while simultaneously removing a remaining portion of the fluid from the sheet. The formed sheet is annealed to remove the remainder of the fluid to form a sheet product having a thickness that includes a layered structure in which a layer of small pores and a layer of large pores are stacked throughout the thickness.
