The present invention relates to an encapsulation method, including alginate-based microencapsulation, for immune protection and for the long-term function of biological materials or therapeutic agents. The biological material or therapeutic agent is encased in a membrane formed by jellying the alginate polymer. Specifically, although not meant to be exclusive, the encapsulation system is intended for use in allogeneic or xenotransplantation. The membrane provides a protective barrier for the encapsulated material that ensures a long lifetime and prevents undesirable effects such as inflammatory and immune reactions from outside the barrier. The invention further relates to a method of making and providing an encapsulated product for use in cell therapy. The therapeutic agent obtained by the encapsulation method provides a way to improve the treatment of various conditions. |
