Cell penetrating iron chelators, optionally in combination with autophagy inhibitors, are used to treat human solid cancer tumors. A preferred chelating agent is alkyl-substituted N- (1-pyridin-2-yl-methylidene) -N- (9H-1,3,4,9-tetraaza-fluoren-2-yl) -hydrazine. A preferred autophagy inhibitor is chloroquine. Pharmaceutical composition comprising iron chelator, pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and optionally autophagy inhibitor, and cancer eradication effective amount of iron chelator, or iron chelator and autophagy inhibitor Also disclosed are methods of treating cancer that are administered in combination with.
