Provided herein are devices and methods for reversibly controlling memory function in living non-human animals. Some variations of methods for affecting memory function include temporarily suppressing hippocampal neurons (eg, neurons in the dorsal CA1 area of the hippocampus) during memory acquisition or recall. Alternatively or additionally, a method for reversibly affecting memory function includes inhibiting amygdala (eg, amygdaloid lateral) neurons and / or cingulate cortex (eg, anterior cingulate) neurons.
