abstract Provided is a retardation film which can be stretched at a high magnification and can realize a high retardation even when the total degree of substitution of a hydroxy acid-modified glucan derivative is large. In a retardation film containing a hydroxy acid-modified glucan derivative in which a hydroxy acid component is graft-polymerized to a hydroxyl group of a glucan derivative, the average substitution degree of the graft chain of the hydroxy acid component is 0.1 or more, and the graft of the hydroxy acid component The average degree of polymerization of the chain is adjusted to 7 or more, and the hydroxy acid component is grafted at a ratio of 1 mol or more in terms of hydroxy acid to 1 mol of glucose unit of the glucan derivative. The glucan derivative may be cellulose acylate, and the total of the average substitution degree of acyl groups and the average substitution degree of graft chains of hydroxy acid components may be 2.4 or more.
