A method for producing sebacic acid without using a large amount of alkali using a biomass resource-derived substance as a raw material is provided. A method for producing sebacic acid using 10-hydroxy-12-octadecenoic acid as a raw material. One embodiment is described by the following reaction formula. 10-hydroxy-12-octadecenoic acid is produced from linoleic acid, and linoleic acid is obtained by hydrolyzing fats and oils containing linoleic acid obtained from biomass.
