abstract | The present invention provides a rubber composition for a base tread that can improve fuel economy and fracture strength in a well-balanced manner, and a pneumatic tire using the rubber composition. A rubber component, silica, and a silane coupling agent having a mercapto group, and based on a vinyl compound having a structural unit based on a conjugated diene and a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic group in 100% by mass of the rubber component. The content of monomer units based on a vinyl compound having a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic group obtained by reacting a ω-aminoalkylalkoxysilane compound with one end of a conjugated diene polymer having a structural unit is conjugated diene-based.
