Method for producing metallic fuel from surplus plutonium |
abstract |
The present invention provides a method for producing a metal fuel from surplus plutonium, which may include a step of obtaining a mixed powder in which the possibility of nuclear diffusion is reduced by combining plutonium oxide powder and uranium oxide powder. The mixed powder can be converted to a first alloy by electroreducing the mixed powder in a molten salt bath. The first alloy can be compressed to remove the majority of the molten salt adhering to the first alloy to form a compressed alloy-salt mixture. The first alloy can be isolated from the salt by melting the compressed alloy-salt mixture. The first alloy can be further processed to produce fuel rods. Thus, the manufactured metal fuel can be used in fast reactor systems, such as the innovative small module reactor (PRISM). [Selection] Figure 1 |
