abstract | A method for treating an iron deficiency disorder in a patient's brain and a method for treating iron overload in a patient are provided. The H-ferritin receptor on endothelial cells in the rat brain microvasculature is a means for carrying iron across the blood-brain barrier. A method for treating an iron deficiency disorder in a patient's brain includes administering an H-ferritin-iron complex to a patient in need. A method for using H-ferritin as a targeting moiety involves combining H-ferritin with a liposome targeted to the brain or cells in the brain. A method for treating iron overload in a patient comprises administering to the patient a multi-subunit ferritin complex that is less than 100% iron binding. [Selection figure] None |
