abstract | [PROBLEMS] To provide a rubber composition for a base tread capable of improving workability, fuel efficiency and fracture strength in a balanced manner, and a pneumatic tire using the rubber composition. A rubber component, silica and a compound represented by the following formula (I) are contained, and in 100% by mass of the rubber component, a structural unit based on a conjugated diene and a polymerizable carbon-carbon double bond are contained. A rubber for base tread, wherein the content of the conjugated diene polymer having a structural unit based on the alkoxysilicon compound is 5% by mass or more, and the content of the silica with respect to 100 parts by mass of the rubber component is 5 to 150 parts by mass.
