abstract | A biodegradable polymer and environmentally compatible non-VOC methyl formate is used as a blowing agent to obtain an expanded and extruded biodegradable polymer foam. The blowing agent is at least one co-foaming agent, wherein the co-blowing agent is a physical co-foaming agent (eg, inorganic agent, hydrocarbon, halogenated hydrocarbon, hydrocarbon with polar functional group, water, Or any combination thereof) or a chemical co-foaming agent, or a combination thereof. The blowing agent blend may be any combination of methyl formate and one or more co-blowing agents. The polymer foam may comprise a biodegradable polymer or a blend of it with other biodegradable polymers or conventional polymers (non-biodegradable polymers). The methyl formate-based foaming agent blend provides a stable foam for a variety of applications including containers and packaging systems, as well as thermal insulation and protective cushioning materials.
