abstract An object of the present invention is to improve the reliability and operation performance of a recording operation on a multilayer recording medium. A fixed management information track for recording management information to be fixedly arranged in a UDF-compliant data structure is set for the layer closest to the laser beam incident surface side of the recording medium. This fixed management information track is closed immediately after setting. Then, a management information write request is made to the closed fixed management information track. In this case, the management information related to the write request is recorded on another track by the replacement process.
