abstract The driving energy of a gas circuit breaker is reduced. A movable arc contact 12 and a counter arc contact 32 are arranged opposite to each other in a sealed container filled with an arc extinguishing gas. During the interruption operation, the movable arc contact 12 and the counter arc contact 32 are separated from each other, and an arc space is generated therebetween. A variable volume puffer chamber 15 is provided which communicates with the arc space and accommodates the arc extinguishing gas blown against the arc A generated in the arc space. The variable volume puffer chamber 15 has a cylindrical shape with a bottom at both ends, and includes a cylinder portion 16 constituting a side portion. The variable volume puffer chamber 15 further constitutes one end portion on the arc space side, slides inside the cylinder portion 16 during the shut-off operation, and moves toward the other end portion of the variable volume puffer chamber 15.
