A method for producing a progenitor cell, maintaining a progenitor cell state for a predetermined period, and differentiating into a final cell type is provided. In the method according to the present invention, epithelial cells are exposed to an epithelial-mesenchymal transition inducer, or epithelial-mesenchymal transition genes are introduced into the epithelial cells to induce epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Thereby, progenitor cells are generated from the epithelial cells. By continuing to administer the inducer or the gene inducer to the generated progenitor cells, the progenitor cells can be maintained in that state. When this progenitor cell is administered to a subject and the progenitor cell proliferates at the target site and then the administration of the inducer or the inducer is stopped, the progenitor cell differentiates into the final cell type of interest.
