titleOfInvention | Method for producing acetal and ketal, and acetal and ketal produced by this method |
abstract | A method for producing a product comprising a glycerol ketal of ethyl levulinate or a propylene glycol ketal of ethyl levulinate comprises: Contacting the glycerol or propylene glycol with ethyl levulinate in the reactor system in the presence of a homogeneous or heterogeneous catalyst. Ethyl levulinate and either glycerol or propylene glycol are heated to remove water, polyol, and excess ethyl levulinate. Excess ethyl levulinate and polyol are returned to the reactor and recycled. The product is distilled in a specific manner and optionally treated with a stabilizer or acid species removal layer to obtain a composition comprising glycerol ketal of ethyl levulinate or propylene glycol ketal of ethyl levulinate. However, the amount of contaminants contained in the composition is about 2% by weight or less. |
