abstract | Methods, compositions and kits based on TAM receptors, or TAM receptor ligands or agonists are provided for the detection of neuropathological diseases or the determination of their progression. Neurological diseases specifically include multiple sclerosis or other myelopathy characterized by demyelination, oligodendrocyte toxicity and microglial activation. These methods include screening a subject's cells, wherein an increase in TAM receptor expression or a change in TAM receptor ligand expression is diagnostic of the presence or progression of the disease. In addition to treatment of subjects with such neuropathological diseases by administration of TAM receptor ligands (such as GAS6 or protein S) or by administration of agonists such as antibodies specific for TAM receptors Axl, Mer or Tyro3 will be described. |
