abstract Microstructure detectors and in situ methods for real-time determination of the microstructure of materials undergoing alloying or other phase transformations. The method performed by the detector includes: (a) detecting light emitted from a plasma plume generated during a phase transformation of the material; and (b) at least some spectral components of the detected light. And (c) determining an expected microstructure of the phase transformed material from the determined spectral components. Closed loop control of the phase transformation process is performed using feedback from the detector to achieve the desired microstructure.
