Adiponitrile is produced by reacting 3-pentenenitrile with hydrogen cyanide. Reaction of 1,3-butadiene with hydrogen cyanide and isomerization of 2-methyl-3-butenenitrile produces the 3-pentenenitrile. Both reactions occur in the presence of a catalyst comprising zerovalent nickel and a phosphorus-containing ligand. The ligand undergoes some degradation by hydrolysis or oxidation. Phosphorus-containing ligand decomposition products are removed during the production of 3-pentenenitrile and adiponitrile. |
