A system for measuring heart rate variability (HRV) comprises three subsystems: a data acquisition subsystem, a data analysis subsystem, and an output subsystem. The patient is connected to a cardiac monitoring device, such as an ECG, and a data collection subsystem records the patient's heart rate and an ECG chart is created from which the patient's HRV value is obtained. The present invention obtains the HRV value through the calculation of a new parameter called relative density (RD). According to the method of the present invention, data points are generated from measured heartbeat peak interval data, and an HRV relative density parameter (RD) is calculated by correlation between two subsets of data points.
