abstract | The present invention relates to the field of diagnostic means. Specifically, the present invention is a method for diagnosing whether a subject suffering from acute inflammation, preferably systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), is at an increased risk of death, comprising: A method comprising measuring the amount of biomarker GDF-15 in a sample and comparing the amount to a reference amount, thereby diagnosing an increased risk of death. The present invention further provides a method for monitoring the progression of acute inflammation in a subject suffering from acute inflammation, comprising measuring the amount of biomarker GDF-15 in the first and second samples of the subject, In this case, the first sample was obtained before the second sample, and the amount of GDF-15 in the first and second samples was compared, where the increase in the amount of GDF-15 was acute inflammation.
