abstract | The present invention includes a bone screw used in the human body. The bone screw includes a shaft having a region threaded along at least a portion of its length and a screw head that includes a locking mechanism for securing the screw (eg, to a bone plate). In certain embodiments, the screw has an outer diameter dimension that is dimensioned to penetrate a threaded hole in the implant. The screw head thereby cooperates with at least a portion of the screw hole of the implant to prevent unscrewing from the implant and to avoid soft tissue damage and other complications associated with unintentional screw removal.
