abstract |
A monitoring test for recurrent breast cancer with a high degree of sensitivity and specificity is provided that detects the presence of a panel of biomarker diversity identified using metabolite profiling methods. This test can detect recurrence of breast cancer approximately one year earlier than currently available monitoring diagnostic tests. A combination of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and two-dimensional chromatography gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC × GC-MS) is used to identify a panel of biomarkers and generate a metabolite profile of a serum sample. NMR and GC × GC-MS data were analyzed by multivariate statistical methods to determine the metabolite signals identified between samples from patients with breast cancer recurrence and samples from disease-free surviving patients.
