Systems and methods for treating neurotransmission disorders are provided. A neurotransmission disorder is present in a nerve pathway. This neural pathway can be a cortical-neuromuscular pathway, an intracerebral neural pathway, or a sensory-cortical pathway. A synchronized external stimulus is applied to a first point proximate to the first neural component at one end of the pathway and a second point proximate to the second neural component at the other end of the pathway. Two induced neural handshake signals reach the same point at the point of neurotransmission in the neural pathway, causing and stimulating a rehabilitation process in which the neural connection is permanently improved. Synchronized applied electrical signals applied to the first and second points may have opposite polarities in bipolar nerve stimulation or may have the same polarity and waveform in in-phase nerve stimulation.
