abstract | Compared to the butanol partition coefficient in the presence of salt concentration in the fermentation basal medium, to the non-hydratable organic extractant in the presence of at least one electrolyte at a concentration sufficient to increase the butanol partition coefficient. A method is provided for producing butanol via microbial fermentation in which extraction results in a butanol product being removed during fermentation. The electrolyte may include a salt that dissociates to form free ions in the fermentation medium or the aqueous phase of the two-phase fermentation medium. Also provided are methods and compositions for recovering butanol from the fermentation medium. |
