Multiple modality contrasts can be used to generate images that are combined and represented to generate images similar to those generated with wavelength-absorbing dyes found under white light illumination. Images obtained with other complementary contrast modalities can be represented using engineering color schemes based on traditional contrast techniques used to reveal the same anatomy and histochemistry. It provides relevance to medical training and experience. The dark field contrast image derived by refractive index and the fluorescent DAPI counterstained image are combined to produce an image similar to that obtained with conventional H & E dyes for pathological interpretation. Such multimodal image data can be streamed for live navigation of histological samples, and also includes DNA probes for genes (FISH), sites for mRNA expression (mRNA-ISH), and immunohistochemistry. The (IHC) probe maps a tissue section that can be combined with molecular localization on the same tissue section, used for evaluation, and prepared for mass spectrometric imaging.
