The present invention provides catalytic deamination for the production of caprolactam. A catalytic process for preparing caprolactam, pipecolic acid, and derivatives thereof from lysine or alpha-amino-epsilon-caprolactam starting materials, and the products produced thereby. A process for preparing caprolactam or a derivative thereof, comprising contacting a reagent comprising lysine or alpha aminocaprolactam with a gas comprising a catalyst and hydrogen gas in the presence of a solvent. The catalyst can be provided on a support material such as a transition metal. [Selection figure] None |
