abstract A β-type sialon, a light-emitting device, and a method for producing a β-type sialon capable of realizing high emission peak intensity are provided. A β-sialon represented by the general formula: Si 6-z Al z O z N 8-z is dissolved in Eu, and the coefficient of variation in characteristic X-ray intensity corresponding to Al is 26% or less. A β-type sialon, which is a β-type sialon in which Eu is dissolved, and is a light emitting device using the β-type sialon. The β-sialon manufacturing method includes a firing step in which an oxide, silicon nitride, and aluminum nitride are blended, a europium compound is added and heated in a nitrogen atmosphere, and the obtained sintered body is pulverized. Characteristic X corresponding to Al, including an annealing process for heating the pulverized sintered body in a rare gas atmosphere or in a vacuum, an acid treatment process for acid-treating the heat-treated product, and a water tank process for removing fine powder. A β-sialon having a coefficient of variation of the line intensity of 26% or less is manufactured. [Selection figure] None
