A polymer electrolyte membrane exhibiting relatively high ion conductivity and a method for producing the same are provided. The polymer electrolyte membrane of the present invention is an ion conductive polymer electrolyte membrane composed of a polymer. The polymer contains a hydrophobic main chain and a side chain bonded to the main chain. The side chain includes a hydrophobic main chain portion and a plurality of side chain portions bonded to the main chain portion. The side chain portion includes a hydrophobic first portion bonded to the main chain portion and a second portion bonded to the first portion. The second part contains an ion conductive group.
