abstract A percutaneous subject monitoring system and a subject detection method are provided. Described herein is a transcutaneous analyte monitoring system (TAMS) that extends life and improves analyte detection. Also described are kits for use with TAMS and methods for using TAMS and kits. In a preferred embodiment, the TAMS comprises a protective semipermeable membrane that covers the surface of the hydrogel. The protective semipermeable membrane contacts the user's skin to prevent contamination or fouling of the hydrogel. Optionally, the hydrogel includes one or more wetting agents and / or immobilized enzymes. In another preferred embodiment, the TAMS includes at least one passage or pocket that increases the amount of oxygen supplied to the hydrogel. In one embodiment, a method is provided for improving the detection of an analyte by TAMS. [Selection] Figure 9
