abstract To develop a reliable diagnostic test for detecting hepatitis A virus in a viremia sample. Disclosed are hepatitis A virus specific primers and probes derived from conserved regions of the hepatitis A virus genome. Also disclosed are nucleic acid-based assays that use capture oligonucleotides, primers, and probes. An isolated oligonucleotide of 60 nucleotides or less in length is disclosed, the isolated oligonucleotide comprising: (a) a nucleotide sequence of at least 10 contiguous nucleotides from a particular sequence; (b) of (a) A nucleotide sequence having 90% sequence identity as two nucleotide sequences; or (c) the complement of (a) and the complement of (b).
