An object of the present invention is to provide a surface modification method for a vulcanized rubber or a thermoplastic elastomer which can economically and advantageously impart various functions such as slidability and biocompatibility depending on the application. A surface modification method using a vulcanized rubber or a thermoplastic elastomer as a modification target, wherein a polymerization initiation point is formed on the surface of the modification target, and the polymerization initiation point is a starting point. And a step 2 of growing a non-functional polymer chain by radical polymerization of the non-functional monomer and further growing a functional polymer chain by radical polymerization of the functional monomer.
