abstract The present invention relates generally to a method of using light treatment to maintain a specific cell type in a subject. These methods are particularly useful for cell regeneration and replacement in tissue injury such as CNS or PNS injury, and transplantation of organs, tissues and cells. A composition for treating a disease or condition in a subject comprising neural stem cells, neural progenitor cells or mesenchymal stem cells, having a wavelength of 200-1500 nm and a power density of 1-100 mW / cm 2. Providing a composition comprising exposing the cells to light stimulation performed with light having the light stimulation, wherein the light stimulation promotes cell differentiation or proliferation.
