A novel diagnostic imaging technique for identifying the source of pain objectively, accurately and specifically, and identifying the source of pain, particularly back pain, especially lower back pain, and energy in the region Providing a method for treating pain to be delivered. The pain factor is labeled with a targeted drug or marker administered into the body. The labeled pain factor is imaged with a suitable imaging means in a manner that allows selective identification and localization of the pain source or region of transmission. Pain factors labeled and imaged in this manner can include one or more neural factors, vascular factors, cellular factors and inflammatory factors. A location that includes a pain factor that is bound by a selectively targeted agent is selectively treated with directed energy toward the region that contains the targeted agent that binds to the pain factor.
