A battery-operated modular surgical device is provided. A handle assembly includes a detachable hand grip and a handle body. The handgrip is formed to allow the surgeon to handle the surgical device with one hand and has an upper portion and an internal battery assembly 301 that provides power to the surgical instrument. The internal battery assembly has at least one energy storage battery. The handle body is operable to removably connect at least the upper portion of the handgrip to the handle body and to create a sterile seal around at least a portion of the handgrip when connected to the handle body Yes, and is operable to electrically couple the handgrip internal battery assembly to the surgical instrument, thereby providing power to the surgical instrument for surgically acting on human tissue.
