Disclosed is a liquid crystal display device capable of imparting further pretilt stabilization (high alignment stability) to liquid crystal molecules. A liquid crystal display device includes a pair of alignment films 22 and 32 provided on opposite sides of a pair of substrates, and a liquid crystal having a negative dielectric anisotropy provided between the pair of alignment films. A liquid crystal display element having a liquid crystal layer 40 including molecules 41 is provided, and at least one of the pair of alignment films includes a compound in which a polymer compound having a crosslinkable functional group as a side chain is crosslinked. A pretilt is imparted by the compound obtained, and the liquid crystal layer contains at least one compound represented by the general formula (101) or the general formula (102).
