Methods and compositions for improving protein production are provided. The method includes (a) introducing a first nucleic acid sequence comprising a signal sequence operably linked to a desired protein sequence into a host cell, (b) expressing the first nucleic acid sequence, (c) co-expressing a second nucleic acid sequence encoding a chaperone or foldase selected from the group consisting of bip1, ero1, pdi1, tig1, prp1, ppi1, ppi2, prp3, prp4, calnexin, and lhs1; and (D) collecting a desired protein secreted from the host cell.
