abstract A lithium secondary battery having high capacity and good charge / discharge cycle characteristics is provided. A positive electrode having a positive electrode mixture layer containing a positive electrode active material on one or both sides of a current collector, a negative electrode, a non-aqueous electrolyte, and a separator. The positive electrode mixture layer of the positive electrode includes lithium and nickel. The lithium-containing composite oxide has a molar ratio of nickel to lithium of 0.05 to 1.05, and the non-aqueous electrolyte has the following general formula ( A lithium secondary battery containing 0.5 to 30% by mass of the phosphate ester compound represented by 1). [In said general formula (1), R < 1 >, R < 2 > and R < 3 > are respectively independently the C1-C12 hydrocarbon group which may be substituted by the halogen atom. ] [Selection figure] None
